Building Futures Through Safer Classrooms in Nigeria

Ugolin Kins School in Nigeria was founded by Okoroafor Linda Nkechi, a passionate mother and graduate who began by helping children in her community with homework after school. “I never imagined this would grow into a full school,” Linda recalls. “I simply wanted to make sure no child was left behind because they couldn’t read or write.”

Recognizing the urgent need for accessible education, Linda and her husband established a small building near their home, which led to the official opening of Ugolin Kins School on September 15, 2014. “We started with 20 learners and three educators,” she says. “Today, we serve over 300 learners with a team of 23 dedicated teachers. It’s been an incredible journey.”

Beyond growth in numbers, the school has focused on creating a safe and nurturing environment. Through Opportunity EduFinance’s EduQuality Program, the leadership team participated in workshops to strengthen school organization and classroom practices. One workshop on Child Protection was transformative. “It opened our eyes,” Linda explains. “We realized that discipline should never harm a child. That’s why we banned corporal punishment, even though it wasn’t easy at first.”

The school implemented a formal Child Protection Policy, trained teachers, and engaged parents to explain the changes. “We wanted parents to understand that safety and respect are the foundation of learning,” Linda emphasizes. As a result, classrooms became more constructive and supportive spaces for learners.

Ugolin Kins also introduced financial support initiatives. Linda shares a touching example: “One day, we discovered a student selling snacks to pay her fees. That broke my heart. We gave her our first scholarship because no child should have to choose between learning and survival.”

Today, Ugolin Kins School is more than an academic institution; it’s a community committed to education, safety, and opportunity for every child. “Our dream is simple,” Linda concludes. “To give every child a chance to learn in a safe, loving environment.”
