Impact Story: Mt. Claire Preparatory School, Kenya

Before establishing Mt. Claire Preparatory School in Kenya in 2014, Madam Charity Chege and her husband were running a school in their own home. Madam Chege manages the school that’s owned jointly by the couple, while her husband works as a teacher in another school.

After securing funding from Juhudi Microfinance Institution, the couple leased a piece of land to relocate the school, allowing them to accommodate more space for the children. They will also use the capital to develop the school buildings and general infrastructure, all with a view to improve the children’s learning.

Madam Chege and her husband joined EduQuality, a program of Opportunity EduFinance, to get support for running their school. The program’s cluster meetings, where school leaders in the same geographical area exchange knowledge among peers, have provided the couple with opportunities not only to improve their knowledge but also to build a network of fellow school leaders.

The cluster meetings and the School Leadership Professional Development (SLPD) workshops which are also part of EduQuality, have boosted the school’s efforts to establish an effective administrative structure. One concrete result of the support is that Mt. Claire Preparatory School is now following budgeting plans for future school years.
