Impact Story: Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Education Centre, Guatemala

In the heart of San Andres Itzapa, Chimaltenango, the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Educational Centre (NPH) stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for students from diverse and challenging backgrounds. Founded in 1996 by Father William Wasson, an American priest who dedicated his life to teaching children across Latin America, the center initially served as a children’s home, welcoming vulnerable children in need of protection and care. In 1997, it expanded to become an educational center dedicated to the holistic development of its students.

Over the years, NPH has adapted to the evolving needs of its community and students, who come from difficult circumstances, ranging from homelessness to those facing legal troubles. Despite facing numerous challenges, including changes in adoption and child protection laws, the school has remained a vital part of the community. NPH has not only endured but has flourished, growing from eighteen students in its early years to a thriving student body of 270 today.

At the heart of NPH’s success lies its commitment to accessibility. The school has made education available to many families through affordable fees and scholarships, with a dedicated committee evaluating recipients. The presence of Montessori classrooms, English lessons, and computer classes further enriches the curriculum. The school’s reputation is spread largely by word of mouth within the community, and the positive impact of the institution is evident. Opportunity International EduFinance has played a critical role in helping NPH enhance its academic program. The partnership began with the key leaders, Administrative Director, Julio Tzirin, and Elementary School Coordinator, Mariel Galindo, attending an introductory seminar by EduFinance. During this session, they were introduced to EduQuality and Pathways to Excellence, to provide training, resources, and local expertise to improve school leadership capabilities, educational standards, and teaching practices.

Empowering Leaders Through the EduQuality Program

Julio Tzirin reflects positively on the partnership, especially noting the accessibility of the cluster model employed by EduFinance. Many non-state schools lack an organized structure or framework which is often used by networks of schools to provide learning and academic development. Ultimately, the cluster model fills this 'school system' gap and provides a support network across 4-12 educational institutions for school leaders to rely on, often through regular cluster meetings. This model has helped NPH better identify the needs of the institution through reflection and evaluation. Julio emphasizes the empowerment of school leaders, an essential aspect of the program, which has allowed him to promote better management practices both within the educational community and with parents and students.

For NPH, the primary focus has been on their staff, with Julio and Mariel striving to create a collaborative and supportive environment. Their priorities center around improving teaching and learning, engaging parents and the community, and fostering a strong school culture. The institution has been actively involved in introducing, developing their School Development Plans (SDPs) with various stakeholders, including the teaching community. A key step in the plan has been the implementation of Teacher Mentor Professional Development (TMPD) sessions; two experienced teachers from within the institution are trained to mentor and empower their peers through a mix of in-person coaching and digital content, to ultimately foster a supportive and collaborative teaching environment.

The school’s commitment to teacher development and community involvement is evident in the continued success of its teacher mentor program, now in its second year. Those involved are fully aware of, and enthusiastic about, their responsibilities and the expectations placed upon them.

NPH’s Holistic Approach to Education

What makes NPH special is the schools’ gender-neutral approach, ensuring that all students, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to build vocational skills. One of the schools’ most prominent features is its broad range of workshops and practical training opportunities for students. Thanks to the support of international donors, the school has been able to offer a variety of holistic programs, including carpentry, sewing, and bakery. These workshops provide students with valuable skills that can help them build a future beyond the classroom and support their communities.

The focus on practical learning is aligned with the school’s commitment to offering a well-rounded education that includes both academic and life skills. NPH recognizes that many of its students face unique challenges, and the goal is to provide them with the tools they need to overcome these obstacles and succeed in life.

Building a Stronger Tomorrow with EduFinance and NPH

The impact of Opportunity International EduFinance’s work with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Educational Centre is really taking shape. By empowering educators, supporting community engagement, and fostering a collaborative environment, NPH is building a sustainable foundation for its students. While challenges remain, the school’s resilience and commitment to improvement are clear. Through these efforts, NPH is not just educating children, it is transforming lives and giving young people a chance to break the cycle of poverty and hardship.

The journey of NPH reflects the power of community-driven education, where collaboration, dedication, and innovative thinking can make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most. With continued support from programs like EduFinance, NPH is poised to build an even brighter future for its students and the wider community.
