Impact Story: Muslim School of Science, Pakistan

Muslim School of Science was founded in March 2015 in the rural village of Basti Khuda Yar Wala, with the aim of providing a safe, accessible education to local children. Before the school opened, the nearest government school was located two kilometers away, a significant distance that raised security concerns for parents, especially for girls. As a result, many families hesitated to send their children to school, limiting their access to education.

Starting with just 35 students and two teachers in a modest two-room facility, the school has since expanded to accommodate 473 students, with 15 classrooms and basic amenities that support pre-primary, middle, and secondary education. This growth has been fueled in part EduQuality, a program by Opportunity EduFinance, which the school joined in 2023.

As part of EduQuality, the school received a school improvement loan of PKR 500,000 (USD 1,800) through Agahe, a local microfinance institution. These funds were used to expand infrastructure, including additional classrooms, a boundary wall for safety, and enhanced facilities. Moreover, the school adopted improved financial management practices and created a more child-friendly learning environment by banning corporal punishment and focusing on positive behavior management.

“The Pathways to Excellence framework helped us assess the quality of our school and plan strategically for improvements. It has enhanced our approach to both school management and school culture, and the changes we’ve made have improved the overall learning environment.”

Thanks to EduQuality’s support, Muslim School of Science has grown into a thriving institution that not only serves more children but also fosters a safer, more inclusive environment for learning. With a current enrollment of 203 girls and 270 boys, the school is playing a vital role in improving education access for children in rural Punjab, empowering both students and their community.
